Counselling generally focuses on finding strategies for
coping with immediate issues like:
managing anxiety, decision making, dealing
with loss, coping with change, building self- esteem, & dealing with
conflict
. Sometimes there are
deeper issues beneath these presenting issues & then psychotherapy is
relevant. An example would be someone with a very harsh inner critic, so
anything he/she does is never good enough. This person then presents in therapy
as stressed & burnt out. No amount of self -esteem building will last until
the issue of the ‘inner critic’ is worked through in psychotherapy.
